How it works
Work Schedule Dot Net
Work Schedule Dot Net is the original online employee scheduling service. Managers create the employee schedule online using only a web browser. This can be done either automatically or manually. Then employees can access their schedule by web, or by telephone.
Advantages of scheduling in the cloud
WSDN uses the SaaS (Software as a Service) model of computing in the cloud. This means you can offload the headaches of networking, hardware, backup, and storage to us. We take care of it all so you can concentrate on your work schedule.
Cloud computing also has the fantastic advantage over traditional software that you can use it from anywhere, whether at the office, at home, or on a trip.
The time block editor
At the heart of the Work Schedule Dot Net service is the time block editor, which allows you to manage many of your employees' schedules at once, much like a word processor allows you to manipulate a large number of words at once. Standard calendar sites can not handle manipulating, sorting and filtering the concurrent schedules of many employees, but it's our specialty. The time block editor is rich with the kinds of features you would expect to find in a word processor or spreadsheet program, such as copying, moving, coloring, etc. The main difference is that the time block editor lets you select time blocks instead of characters. Mastering the time block editor is the key to using the Work Schedule Dot Net system. Once you have learned how to use one time block editor, you know how to use the others. This keeps the learning curve at a minimum.
What is a time block? The time block is the smallest building block of your schedule, and specifies a period of time that exactly one employee, who may or may not be specified, is doing something (or will do something). The most common type of time block is a shift, which designates when an employee will work (or has worked). However time blocks are also used to designate time off (called time off blocks), and when an employee is available or not (called availability time blocks). You can also create time blocks that are not yet assigned to any particular employee (called open time blocks). This is how you declare coverage needs. These open time blocks can later be assigned to an employee automatically by WSDN, or left for an employee to take if the sign up feature is enabled.
The Current Schedule
The Current Schedule is the main work area for scheduling, where the actual schedule resides. It is one of several time block editors in the system. Unless you are using the system for attendance only, you
will probably find that you spend most of your time in the Current Schedule. The posted part of the Current Schedule can be seen online by your employees, and constitutes the official schedule at any point in time.
Getting started
After signing up for a free trial, Work Schedule Dot Net will send you a welcome email with your login information
and a link to your company login page. The first time you login, WSDN will guide you through a 5-minute setup wizard to set the appropriate options for your account based on your situation.
Don't worry: Anything you miss or get wrong in the setup wizard can be changed later. We also offer a free consultation by phone and web to help you get started.
The basic scheduling process
Here is the basic three step process for generating a week's schedule:
1. Initialize: This gives you a starting point by defaulting your schedule to the "typical" week.
2. Make changes / Autoschedule: You adjust the schedule based on what's happening that week. You can use the automation features to replace full-timers who are out that week,
or perhaps to fill the entire schedule based on availability.
3. Post: This simple two-click step tells WSDN that the schedule is official through the date of your choosing. Now employees can see the schedule from today through the post date.
The need for speed!
The Work Schedule Dot Net time block editor is specifically designed for high performance. Using the latest AJAX technology, WSDN can handle thousands of time blocks on a single page by avoiding redundant page loads. We use the latest version of Microsoft SQL Server to optimize database queries.
Security and backups
We use state of the art quad core servers in high speed, low latency data centers that have multiple redundant power backup and redundant internet connectivity to ensure that our servers stay operational all the time. Data is continuously backed up to a different data center, ensuring that your data is safe in the event of an unforeseen emergency. Of course user communication with WSDN is encrypted with the latest SSL (Secured Sockets Layer) technology and firewall protected.
